Making Storage in a Small Space

If you've read some of my previous posts you may recall me mentioning I have a pretty small apartment. Don't get me wrong it the perfect size for me and my husband right now and it was a God find! If you're wondering what I mean by that, Nick and I moved to San Diego a few days after we got married without any living prospects! That was pretty stressful and scary so you can imagine why I would call this apartment a God send.

I am grateful for the place we live, but I will admit that a one bedroom apartment can start feel pretty small when your stuck, quarantined inside majority of the time. I am no stranger to small rooms and living spaces, I've had somewhere between 4-6 roommates the 4 years I was in college. So I thought I'd share how I have used storage and created my own in a small space.

The first thing I did was take advantage of built in storage in the apartment already. There is a wall unit in the kitchen/dining room area with sliding mirror doors. I don't love the mirror doors, but they do make the space feel bigger and they double as mirrors for my very own private dance studio! This is where I keep snack food, cleaning supplies, kitchen appliances, camping gear, and all of Nick's military gear.

There is a linen closet right outside our bathroom and I was able to use these cubby bins to keep everything organized and still look nice! Inside I keep extra towels, beach gear, blankets, and and laundry supplies.

Other ways I've made storage is by making a TV stand out of cubby units. They are 2x3 cubbies and I just laid one horizontal and placed the TV on top and had the other two sit tall on each side. The cubbies offer a lot of storage, but I try to keep a few empty to avoid a cluttered look. I also use baskets and cubby bins to hide the ugly stuff, like wires or game controllers.

My kitchen is probably the smallest room of all so I try to make as much space as possible! That is why I used a curtain rod underneath the sink to hang cleaning products to create more room and keep it organized down there. I am also planning on making a sink top cover to allow for more counter space (that's a DIY post you can look forward to reading soon).

These are a few ways I was able to make storage in a small space while also avoiding that overwhelming cluttered look. I am still working on finding a place for everything and by no means am I an expert! I just wanted to share my tips and what I've tried. I'd love to hear how you have made small spaces work and create your own storage.
