DIY Ornaments

It's the first week of December and nothing gets me into the Christmas mood like crafting and baking with some Christmas music in the background. To kick off my December blog posts I thought it would be fitting to share some ornaments I made myself.

This is a very budget-friendly way to decorate for Christmas, as well as a great way to have decor unique to your style and aesthetic. It's also a great tradition to start as a family to create an ornament every year together.

Mason Jar Lid Ornaments

I have a few examples the first I will share are my mason jar lid ornaments. These were probably the most cost-effective of all the ornaments I made. I got a large bag of mason jar lids at a yard sale for $1 and I went out a bought a few pages of Christmas-themed scrapbook paper that were 25 cents each. I made a total of 25 ornaments which would make these about 7 cents each.

Steps:

  • Wash mason jar lids

  • Cut paper to the size of the inside of the lid

  • Hot glue the paper to the lid and some twine to hang it on the tree

Wooden Bead Stars

The next ornaments I made were probably my favorite, these were the wooden bead stars. I had these supplies already so I don't have the price breakdown, however, these would not require much because the supply list is so minimal.

Steps:

  • Weave 10 beads onto string or twine and tye them to make a circle

  • Weave 10 more beads around the center circle 2 at a time weaving them in and out of the first bead circle

  • Weave 5 beads as the points of the star in between the pairs of two beads

  • Make a knot once you string your last bead so it does not unravel.

Bulb Ornaments

I got 24 clear plastic bulb ornaments from Hobby Lobby and did a few different variations with them. They were $9.99 and I used materials I had already had around my house to decorate them, so they would roughly come out to be 42 cents apiece. I put a few different kinds of greenery in some. I used pine, baby's breath, and eucalyptus. For the rest, I use fuzzy yarn and hot glued it around the outside.

These were all so fun to make and I love that my tree will be personalized with these custom ornaments. I wanted to give some different examples of how you can make ornaments without breaking the bank this Christmas! I hope you enjoyed reading and feel inspired to try one of these yourself. No matter what your style is these can easily be customized to your theme or color scheme for the holidays. There is a lot of purchases that happen during this time of year, but remember it's the season celebrating our Creator, so it's fitting to create some things of our own. Merry Christmas!
